Friends forever

There once lived a mouse and frog who were very good friends. Every morning the frog would go to visit the mouse who lived in a hole inside a tree. The mouse very much enjoyed the company of the frog, but the mouse did not realise that the frog was growing increasingly frustrated because it was always him who had to visit the mouse and never the other way around. The lazy little mouse did not know it at the time, but he was slowly making an enemy of his good friend, the frog.
One afternoon, when it was time to return home, the frog decided that he had had enough of this one-sided friendship. And so the frog tied one end of a piece of string to his leg, and then tied the other end of the piece of string to the little mouse’s tail without him noticing.
The frog waved goodbye to the mouse and then dived into the pond at the foot of the tree far below. All at once, completely to his surprise, the string pulled tight on the mouse’s tail and he was dragged from the safety of his tree and sent tumbling into the air towards the pond below. Splash!
The poor little mouse could not swim, and as much as he struggled and struggled to free his tail, he could not untie the piece of string. After much splashing and struggling, the poor mouse finally drowned in the pond.
‘That will teach you to make a fool out of me, you lazy mouse,’ thought the frog.
But this misdeed did not go unnoticed: high up in the sky, a hawk spotted the little mouse floating in the water below. And so the hungry hawk swooped down towards the pond to grab the little mouse for its dinner. It was only when the hawk grasped a hold of the mouse with its sharp talons that the
frog remembered he was still tied to the mouse by the piece of string. Up, up into the sky went the frog, until the hawk came to rest in the tallest branch of a nearby tree. It was then that the frog realised the error of his ways. In setting a trap for his friend, the frog had also set a trap for himself and sealed his own fate. And now he too would be eaten by the hawk because of his wicked plan.

There is an old African proverb that goes… ‘Do not dig too deep a pit for your enemy because you may fall into it yourself.’

Friendship
By Manjari Shukla
Pinku, a little squirrel was fond of placing bets with her friend Tutu parrot. However she always felt disappointed, as she always lost the bet. Poor Pinku was forced to offer five of her favorite nuts in return.
All her friends advised her to avoid any further betting but Pinku used to remain silent with a faint smile.
Tutu had lost one of his paws in a sharp dense bush. Some of his wings had also been damaged, so he used to move with great effort and difficulty.
The entire group of squirrels always made fun of Pinku as she had not won even a single bet against Tutu.
There was a lot of activity and buzz around the jungle as winner of annual award for “LOVING AND KIND HEARTED SOUL” was to be announced.
Everyone in the forest was quite sure that like previous two years, the award was expected to go to Melody sparrow. Melody was known all around the jungle as kind and noble soul. She was always present whenever anyone needed her help.
When the winner was announced, the result was not surprising at all. The Jury had declared Melody as winner.
Melody was called on the stage to receive her prize. When she arrived on stage, she announced-” I think, Pinku is a deserving winner this year.”
Everyone got surprised by this unexpected announcement.
King lion asked her-“but why?”
“Everyone knows that Tutu needs help because of his physical shortcomings. He even needs support to arrange his food. No one gives him company when he wants to play,” Melody replied.
“But no one has ever noticed that Pinku places a bet with Tutu everyday only to lose and share her nuts with him.”
Melody stopped and then said-” Has anyone ever thought why such a sharp squirrel who can run so fast loses a bet every single day to a helpless parrot?”
I bet no one here can defeat Pinku so easily..
The emotional words of Melody moved everyone to tears and everybody looked back to find Pinku standing in a corner gladly supporting Tutu.
And Then king Lion announced-“Come here Pinku. You deserve this award.”
Pinku smiled at Tutu and together they strolled towards the stage to receive the prize.

St George has always been especially honored and respected as a patron saint of Georgia and there are hundreds of churches dedicated to him. Georgian Orthodox Christians celebrate Saint George’s Day, Giorgoba, (Georgian: გიორგობა) twice a year; on May 6 and on 23 November.
St. George was born in the latter part of the third century A.D. to a Greek Christian noble family in Lydda, Palestine. After his father’s death, George enlisted in the Roman army and by his late 20s was promoted to the rank of Tribunus and joined the imperial guard of the Emperor Diocletian at Nicomedia, the eastern capital city of the Roman Empire

During the year 303 A.D., the emperor Diocletian summoned his officers and instructed them to persecute the Christians. Raised as a Christian, George refused to undertake this task. Diocletian offered him gifts of land, money and slaves if he would renounce his faith and make a sacrifice to the Roman gods.
When he refused, George was tortured and then beheaded on April 23 (April 23 corresponds to 6 May on the Gregorian calendar).
The Diocletianic Persecution (303–11) was the Roman Empire’s last and largest persecution of Christianity but failed to destroy the empire’s Christian community. During the fourth century the veneration of George spread from Palestine through Lebanon to the rest of the Eastern Roman Empire.

A Farmer and His Wife
A farmer said to his wife, “You are lazy. You work slowly and lethargically. You waste your time."
The wife was angry at the words of her husband.
She said to her husband, “You are wrong. Stay at home tomorrow. I will go to field. I will do your work there. Will you do my works at home here?"
The farmer said happily, “Very well. I will do your works back at home."
The wife said, “Milk the cow. Feed the pigs. Wash the utensils. Take care of our hen. Spin the yarn."
The woman went to the field. The farmer stayed back at home. He took a vessel and went to the cow to milk it. He tried to milk the cow. He received a good kick. He then went to the pig-sty. He hit his head against the beam. He went to feed the hen. He forgot to spin.
The wife returned from the field when it turned evening. The farmer hung down his head in shame. Thereafter he did not find fault with his wife. They lived happily together for a long time.

100 Percent Love
A boy and a girl were playing together. The boy had a collection of marbles. The girl has some sweets with her. The boy told the girl that he would give her all his marbles in exchange for the sweets with her. The girl agreed.
The boy kept the most beautiful and the biggest marbles with him and gave her the remaining marbles. The girl gave him all her sweets as she promised. That night the girl slept peacefully. But the boy could not sleep as he kept wondering if the girl has hidden some sweets from him the way he had hidden the best marbles from her.

Moral of the Story : If you do not give 100 percent in a relationship, you will always kept doubting if the other person has given her / his hundred percent. This is applicable for any relationship like love, employee – employer, friendship, family, countries, etc…
A Rich Man and His Son
A rich man's son was graduating college.
For months, the son was asking his father for a new car, knowing that his father had more than enough money.
When graduation day came, the young man's father called him into the study. The father handed him a wrapped gift and congratulated him about his graduation and his achievement.
Looking disappointed, the son opened the gift to find a lovely, leather bound journal, with the young man's name embossed on the cover. He angrily raised his voice, threw down the journal and stormed out.
The young man had not seen his father since graduation day. He became successful and was wealthy like his father, with a beautiful home and family. He came to realize his father was aging and it may be time to put the past behind them.
Just then, he received a message that his father had passed, and he had to return home to take care of the estate.
As the mourning son regretfully returned home, he began searching through his father's important papers and saw that still new journal, just as he had left it.
He opened it, and as he flipped through the pages a car key dropped from the back of the journal.
A dealer tag was attached to the key that read "Paid in full. Wherever this car takes you, write about it to remember it forever. Love, Dad"

Always Follow Your Heart
As a child, Monty Roberts was the son of a horse trainer and moved from stable to stable, from ranch to ranch, training horses. The boy’s schooling was constantly interrupted. One day, when he was a senior, his teacher asked him to write about what he wanted to be when he grew up. He did not hesitate and wrote a seven page paper about his aim to be an owner of a horse ranch. It was a detailed paper with the location of buildings, stables and even a house plan. Two days later he received his paper back with an F on the front page.
After class he asked his teacher why he received such a low score.
The teacher told him, “This dream is unrealistic for a boy like you, who has no money, no resources and who comes from an itinerant family. There is no possibility that you will reach this goal."
Then the teacher offered him the opportunity to rewrite the paper with a more realistic attitude.
The boy went home and asked his father how he should respond.
His father told him, “This is a very important decision, so you must come to your own conclusion."
After several days, the boy brought the same paper to his teacher. No changes were made.
He told his his teacher, “Keep the F and I will keep my dream."
Monty Roberts went on to own a 4000 square foot house in the middle of 200 acre horse ranch. He framed the paper he wrote and hung it over his fireplace.
Always remember to follow your heart and never listen to those who do not believe in your ability to achieve your dreams.

MUSIC
Why is music good for children's development?
Singing and music play an important role in our culture. You'll find music present in many aspects of our lives: theater, television, movies, worship, holidays, celebrations, and government and military ceremonies. At home, music can become part of our family cultures—a natural part of our everyday experiences.
From birth, parents instinctively use music to calm and soothe children, to express love and joy, and to engage and interact. Parents can build on these natural instincts by learning how music can impact child development, improve social skills, and benefit children of all ages.
From birth, parents instinctively use music to calm and soothe children, to express love and joy, and to engage and interact. Parents can build on these natural instincts by learning how music can impact child development, improve social skills, and benefit children of all ages.
Music and the Brain: The Benefits of Music-A 2016 study at the University of Southern California’s Brain and Creativity Institute found that musical experiences in childhood can actually accelerate brain development, particularly in the areas of language acquisition and reading skills. According to the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation (NAMM Foundation), learning to play an instrument can improve mathematical learning and even increase SAT scores. But academic achievement isn’t the only benefit of music education and exposure. Music ignites all areas of child development and skills for school readiness, including intellectual, social-emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy. It helps the body and the mind work together. Exposing children to music during early development helps them learn the sounds and meanings of words. Dancing to music helps children build motor skills while allowing them to practice self-expression. For children and adults, music helps strengthen memory skills. In addition to the developmental benefits, simply put: music bring us joy. Just think about listening to a good song in the car with the window down on a beautiful day. That's joy.
Music Games for Kids of All Ages-Children of all ages express themselves through music. Even young infants sway, bounce, or move their hands in response to music. Many preschoolers make up songs and, with no self-consciousness, sing to themselves as they play. Children in elementary school learn to sing together as a group and possibly learn to play a musical instrument. Older children dance to the music of their favorite bands, and use music to form friendships and share feelings. Try these activities and games with your children to experience the pleasure and learning that music brings.
Infants and Music: Infants recognize the melody of a song long before they understand the words. Quiet, background music can be soothing for infants, especially at sleep time. Loud background music may overstimulate an infant by raising the noise level of the room. Sing simple, short songs to infants. Try making up one or two lines about bathing, dressing, or eating to sing to them while you do these activities. Find more musical learning activities for infants.
Infant Music Activity-The infant classroom at Bright Horizons at Wellesley participates in a music activity involving different instruments and singing in both English and Spanish. Visit our Wellesley, MA child care website.
Toddlers and Music: Toddlers love to dance and move to music. The key to toddler music is repetition, which encourages language and memorization. Silly songs make toddlers laugh. Try singing a familiar song and inserting a silly word in the place of the correct word, like “Mary had a little spider” instead of lamb. Let children reproduce rhythms by clapping or tapping objects.
Preschoolers and Music: Preschoolers enjoy singing just to be singing. They aren’t self-conscious about their ability and most are eager to let their voices roar. They like songs that repeat words and melodies, use rhythms with a definite beat, and ask them to do things. Preschool children enjoy nursery rhymes and songs about familiar things like toys, animals, play activities, and people. They also like finger plays and nonsense rhymes with or without musical accompaniment.
School-Age Children and Music: Most young school-age children are intrigued by kids’ singalong songs that involve counting, spelling, or remembering a sequence of events. School-age children begin expressing their likes and dislikes of different types of music. They may express an interest in music education, such as music lessons for kids.
Teens and Music: Teenagers may use musical experiences to form friendships and to set themselves apart from parents and younger kids. They often want to hang out and listen to music after school with a group of friends. Remember those days of basement and garage bands? Teens often have a strong interest in taking music lessons or playing in a band.
There is no downside to bringing children and music together through fun activities. We are able to enjoy the benefits of music from the moment we’re born. Although a good dose of Mozart is probably not increasing our brain power, it’s enjoyable and beautiful. From the pure pleasure of listening to soothing sounds and rhythmic harmonies, to gaining new language and social skills music can enliven and enrich the lives of children and the people who care for them.

The Boy Who Always Won
There was once a boy who liked nothing more in the world than to
win. He loved winning at whatever it may be: football, cards, video games...
everything. And because he couldn't stand losing, he had become an expert
in all kinds of tricks and cheating. He could play tricks in practically every
situation, without being noticed; even in video games or playing alone. He
could win without ever being caught. He won so many times that everyone
saw him as the champion. It meant that almost no one wanted to play with him,
he was just too far ahead of everyone. One person who did play with him was a
poor boy, who was a bit younger. The champion really enjoyed himself at
the poor boy's expense, always making the boy look ridiculous. But the champion
ended up getting bored with all this. He needed something more,so he decided to
apply for the national video games championship, where he would find some
competitors worthy of himself. At the championship he was keen to show his
skills but, when he tried using all those tricks and cheats he knew from a
thousand different games, well... none of them worked. The competition
judges had prevented any of the tricks from working. He felt terribly
embarrassed: he was a good player, but without his cheats, he couldn't beat a
single competitor. He was soon eliminated, and sat there, sad and pensive.
Finally, they announced the name of the tournament champion. It was the
poor boy from home. The one he had always beaten! Our boy realised that the poor
boy had been much cleverer than himself. It hadn't mattered to the poor
boy if he lost and got a good beating, because what he was really doing was
learning from each of his defeats. And from so much learning he had been
transformed into a real master. From then on, the boy who had loved winning
gave up wanting to win all the time. He was quite happy to lose sometimes,
because that was when he would learn how to win on the really important
occasions.
Humility, generosity
and teamwork
Main Lesson
When doing things together the important thing is to make sure
things turn out for the best, rather than worry about how much each individual
has contributed
Once, a
group of boys decided to play a proper soccer game. Each one of them would
bring something used in professional matches. So one would bring the ball,
another the whistle, another the goalposts, others the goalkeeper gloves, the
corner flags, etc...
But
before the game started, while they were picking the teams, there was a slight
argument. They decided that the boy who had brought the most important object
would get to pick the teams. Well, now they couldn't decide which had been
the most important object, so they thought it would be best to just start
playing, using all the objects, and gradually get rid of what people had
brought, to see which things were truly indispensable. The first thing they got rid of was the whistle, because the referee could just shout instead. Then they tossed the goalkeeper gloves; they managed to save the ball just as well without them. Neither did they really notice when they stopped using the corner flags, nor when they replaced the goalposts with a couple of bins. And so they continued, until finally they replaced the football with an old tin, and managed to keep playing...
While
they were playing with the tin, a man and his son passed by. Seeing the boys
playing like that, the man said to his son:"Look, son. Learn from
those kids over there. Without even a ball they're managing to play football,
even though they're never going to be able to improve playing that way."
The
boys heard him say this, and realised that because of their excessive pride and
egotism, what could have been a great match had turned into a shameful
display, which they were hardly enjoying at all. That moment, they decided
to put their selfish opinions to one side, and they agreed to start playing the
match again, from the start, and with all the proper equipment.
And it
really was a great game. No one thought about who was playing better or worse.
Rather, they just concentrated on having fun and improving their game.

Facts for kids
Mothering Sunday
Georgia is celebrating a
special day honouring mothers and pregnant women – Mother’s Day.On this day,
children gift their mothers an array of flowers and congratulatory cards and
write letters to tell them how important they are.
Georgia is the second country that
celebrates Mother’s Day annually on March 3. Norway was the first country to
start the celebrations, however, it marks Mother’s Day on different dates each
year.
This year Norway marked Mother’s Day
on February 11.
Celebrating Mother’s Day in Georgia
was established following the suggestion of the country’s first President Zviad
Gamsakhurdia, and in 1991 the decision to celebrate the occasion was approved
by the country’s Supreme Council.
The purpose of Mother's Day is to
maintain the tradition of respect for women, to value their role in the family
and appreciate their enduring efforts in the upbringing of children.
Facts for kids
Mother’s Day is a special day
dedicated to celebrating significant people in our lives. The
celebration of Mother’s Day has been
influenced by many different cultures, time periods
and women. Mothers throughout history
Mother’s Day, as we know it today,
with breakfast in bed, cards and presents, is a relatively young event,
but the celebration of mothers and mother-figures dates back
to ancient times.
Ancient times
In ancient times, many cultures
would celebrate a mother goddess whom they viewed as the mother of
all. In ancient Egypt, Isis was worshipped as a mother goddess. Her
son Horus was said to be the first of the Pharaohs. In ancient Greece,
people worshipped Rhea, who was mother of the gods, and Gaia, the
earth goddess. Festivals to celebrate mother goddesses were often
held in Spring as this was viewed as a time of new life and fertility. New
life and fertility were associated with women and mothers as they are the
ones who give birth. An example of one such celebration was the Roman festival
of Hilaria, honouring the mother goddess Cybele. In many countries
around the world, Mother’s Day is still celebrated in Spring.
Mothering Sunday
As time progressed, Christianity
began to spread across Europe and England, incorporating some of the
ancient festivals into its newer religious celebrations. During the 1600s
in England, the fourth Sunday of Lent, a date close to the Roman
Hilaria, became known as Mothering Sunday because early Christians
honoured the mother of Christ (the Virgin Mary) on this day. People would
also decorate their Mother Church (the church where they were baptised)
with flowers and jewels.Soon, the Mothering Sunday celebration began to include
the celebration of actual mothers. On this day, maids and servants were
allowed to travel back home to visit their mothers. Traditionally they
would bake a simnel cake, filled with spices and fruit, to take home to
her. Families would feast and give small presents to their mothers.
The origins of
Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day, as we know it today, began in
North America and was pioneered by two women: Julia Ward Howe and later,
Anna Jarvis. Julia Ward Howe’s quest to create a holiday dedicated to
mothers and peace began in 1870, a time of civil war in North America.
Howe wanted mothers to come together to stop their sons from fighting
against each other. However, Howe’s version of Mother’s Day only lasted a
few years. In 1908, Anna Jarvis campaigned for an official Mother’s
Day.Jarvis succeeded and was also responsible for
making the white carnation (her mother’s favourite flower) a popular choice for giving on this day. Jarvis believed so strongly in Mother’s Day
that she even left her job to commit herself to having it recognised
throughout the United States. Her hard work paid off in 1914 when Mother’s
Day was finally recognised nationally, with an official celebration date of
the second Sunday in May. Mother’s Day soon became
commercialised (used to make money) with card sellers and florists promoting
their products as essential to Mother’s Day. Jarvis disagreed with this and was
even arrested for protesting against the sale of flowers at a Mother’s Day
event. She felt as though people had taken her pure holiday and were
greedily trying to profit from it. Despite this, by the time of her death,
Mother’s Day was being celebrated in over forty countries. Today,
Mother’s Day is celebrated in over seventy nations around the world.
Mother’s Day around
the world
Sweden -In Sweden plastic flowers are sold on Mother’s Day, with all
the proceeds going towards mothers and their children who are in
need.
India-A ten-day festival called Durga Puja, which celebrates the
mother goddess Durga, is often closely associated with the celebration of
Mother’s Day.
The former Yugoslavia
-In the former Yugoslavia various
family members are celebrated with a series of holidays, starting on
Children’s Day, three days before Christmas. The following Sunday is Mother’s
Day, and the next Sunday is Father’s Day.
Ethiopia-There is no firm date for Mother’s Day in Ethiopia as it
occurs when the rainy season ends. When the day finally arrives, families
return home for a large feast and two or three days of celebration.
Mothers and daughters rub butter into their skin and sing songs.
Australia-In Australia we often treat our mum to breakfast in bed, or
take her out to lunch at a lovely restaurant. Children often make their
own Mother’s Day cards to give with some flowers, or perhaps a box of
chocolates.

Can you say
mother in any other languages? Mother is ‘Mère’ in French, ‘Mutter’

coincidence that these words all start with M? Not really, as in many
languages the word for mother begins with the letter M.
I
t’s not just mothers who are celebrated, Japan has a National Children’s Day
called ‘Kodomo no Hi’. Originally, this day celebrated only sons, but now
both sons and daughters are celebrated.
I n France,
during the years after World War I, December 19 was called ‘La Fête des
Mères’. Mothers were awarded medals according to the number of children
they had: • four
or five children would win them a bronze medal,• six or seven children would
win them a silver medal,• eight or more children and they would receive a gold
medal.
During the 1920s and
1930s it was suggested that Mother’s Day and Father’s Day should be
combined to form a Parent’s Day. Do you think this is a good idea?
This is amazing!

in sixteenth-century Russia. She had 69 children with her husband Feodor
Vassilyev. They included sixteen pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets
and four sets of quadruplets!

year, Australians spend about $1.36 billion on Mother’s Day and $660 million

Proverbs are also known as sayings. Proverbs give some form of life advice.
Every language and culture has them, and many proverbs exist in more than one

English Proverbs for Kids from Syvum
What are Proverbs?
Proverbs are wise sayings. They
usually:
Are popular and memorable;
e.g., All's well that ends
well.
Are short and to the point;
e.g., Practice makes
perfect.
Provide wise advice;
e.g., Slow but sure wins
the race.
Contain simple truths from
experience over the years.
e.g., Honesty is the best
policy.
Most
proverbs exhibit simple rhyme and elegant balance.
Are Proverbs different from Idioms?
Idioms,
like Proverbs, are common sayings. However, they usually do not make sense at
first sight and do not offer any advice. For example, to blow one's own
trumpet, which means to praise oneself or boast, is an idiom. It may be
converted to a proverbial expression as follows: It is but a fool who
blows his own trumpet or Don't blow your own trumpet.
There is no clear dividing line between idiomatic phrases and proverbial
expressions. If and when an idiomatic phrase becomes widely popular, it may be
regarded a proverb, e.g., Don't put the cart
before the horse.
How can you master Proverbs?
You can master Proverbs by
attempting the associated activity for Kids in the Syvum Family Fun Zone. You

17.04.2019 My favourite fairy tale
Cinderella
Once there was a hardworking girl with a a heart of gold and a
wicked stepmother. She got a makeover from a fairy godmother and scored a dream
date at the ball with a prince who tracked her down by her single lost glass
slipper… and this story crossed the globe for thousands of years, winning
hearts wherever it went. Although our version of “Cinderella” was recorded by
17th-century French writer Charles Perrault, according to the well-respected
scholarly website Sur La Lune
Fairy Tales, there
may be as many as 1,500 traditional variants of the tale around the world,
including “The Girl with the Rose Red Slippers” from ancient Egypt, and a
ninth-century A.D. Chinese version that just might explain the story’s
fascination with small feet.
No plot could be more
romantic than this one: A kind and virtuous Beauty offers herself as a hostage
to free her father from the castle of a fearsome Beast. When she falls in love
with the Beast despite his outward appearance, he’s transformed into a handsome
Prince. Who among us has not felt unworthy of a lover yet longed to have our
inner value recognized? Who has not dreamed of romantic love with the power to
redeem and transform? No wonder “Beauty and the Beast,” originally a French
story, is the second most frequently visited story on Sur La Lune
Fairy Tales.
This narrative about the dangers of unwholesome appetite and children’s drive for survival is as morbidly fascinating as a true crime story. Maybe that’s why it’s one of the most frequently visited fairy tales on Sur La Lune Fairy Tales even without any publicity from Disney. Some scholars believe that the Great Famine of 14th-century Europe inspired the familiar German version of “Hansel and Gretel” recorded by the famous Brothers Grimm some 500 years later. Regardless, this gruesome story is one of the most widely told around the world; variants include “The Story of the Bird That Made Milk” in southern Africa (in which the father is the villain of the piece), the southern Indian tale, “Kadar and the Cannibals,” and our absolute favorite, the Russian folk tales of Baba Yaga, a witch with steel teeth who lives in a house on chicken legs and flies around in a mortar and pestle. Can you guess which famous horror movies were inspired by true stories?
Though the story was probably intended as a warning for children to follow directions, the rebellious character of Little Red Riding Hood is the most modern of the fairy tale heroines we’ve met so far. Red sets off alone to visit her grandmother with instructions not to step off the forest path—advice she promptly disregards, attracting the attention of a talking wolf who sets out to eat and impersonate Grandma. What happens next depends on what you read. In the 17th-century French version recorded by Charles Perrault, Red gets gobbled up by the wolf. The End. In other tellings, across Europe, North America, China, Japan, and Ghana, she’s saved at the last minute by a guy with an axe, or the wolf chokes on her hood, or he eats both Grandma and Red but is forced to vomit them up unharmed.
Naturally, bold,
independent Red has continued to attract fans: The 19th-century English
novelist Charles Dickens called
her his “first love,” saying of his childhood, “I felt if I could have married
Little Red Riding-Hood, I should have known perfect bliss.” Of the many recent
retellings on page and screen, our favorite is the animated film Hoodwinked! with Anne Hathaway
voicing a wonderfully sassy, attitudinal Red.
Snow White is more of
a patsy than many of these fairy tale heroines (which is saying quite a bit).
The most active thing she does is mother a household full of dwarfs. She never
retaliates against the evil queen who tries to kill her for her youth and
beauty, she waits for her prince frozen in her glass coffin, as feminist
critics have put it, “an
object, to be displayed and desired… patriarchy’s ideal woman, the perfect
candidate for Queen.” In an essay entitled “My Stepmother, Myself,” Garrison
Keillor actually
suspects the prince of necrophilia! Yikes!
Regardless, Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first animated full-length Disney
film, launching a hugely successful franchise and setting the pattern for all
those to come, with warbling songs, sidekicks for comic relief, and lots of
animal helpers (always our favorite part). It was also the first film
soundtrack ever to be released separately as an album. Surprisingly “Snow
White” revived the evil queen’s distinctively Grimm directive to cut out Snow’s
heart and bring it home in a box. But Disney’s queen did escape the original
fairy tale punishment of being forced to dance to her death in red-hot shoes.
According to Film Site ,”[the movie] took almost
four years and an astronomical (at the time) $1.7 million to create, and was
released for its premiere during the Christmas season of 1937.”
Since then, we’ve seen
many influential movie retellings: Snow White and the Huntsman, Mirror,
Mirror, The Huntsman: Winter’s War, and several literary works
including Snow, a graphic novel set in 1930s New York City.
Finally, a fairy tale hero who’s a boy! Jack
is a bold trickster and a rule-breaker, not unlike his compatriots Aladdin and
Peter Pan. He trades the family’s only cow for a handful of magic beans. When a
giant beanstalk sprouts overnight, Jack seizes the chance to climb to a giant’s
castle and steal all of his magical possessions.
As Sur La Lune Fairy Tales points
out, “The desire for a means of ascending to the sky is as old as the Tower of
Babel and Jacob’s Ladder. Asia has the story of the branch of the Bodhi of
Buddha which grows rapidly towards the sky once it is planted.” There are
versions found among Europeans, Scandinavians, and Native American groups
across Canada.
But the story we know
is from England. In fact, Jack is actually English, or why would the giant call
out “Fee fi fo fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman”? Jack himself is the
perfect role model for young imperialists being raised to conquer the globe:
Daring, athletic, and bold, he feels entitled to everything he can grab, from
the giant’s golden harp to the goose that lays the golden eggs. He ruthlessly
chops down the beanstalk, killing the giant. Can’t you just see him claiming
the world in the sky for queen and country?
If you found Snow White annoyingly passive,
meet Sleeping Beauty, whose main claim to fame is, obviously, her century-long
snooze, thanks to the curse of the wicked fairy who isn’t invited to Beauty’s
christening. Throughout her childhood, everyone coddles young Beauty, sometimes
known as Briar Rose, but on her 16th birthday, fate finds her, and off to sleep
she goes.
Sleeping Beauty may be a far-fetched tale, but it’s also
a far-reaching one; according to Sur La Lune Fairy Tales,
it dates to the “Volsunga Saga” from 13th-century Iceland, is found all across
Europe, especially France, Italy and Germany, and even appears in The
Arabian Nights.
In 1890, Russian
composer Tchaikovsky wrote
the musical score for a much-loved Sleeping Beauty ballet, and later still, the
folks at Disney borrowed some of his music for their 1959 animated film
version. Disney’s Sleeping Beauty was
lavishly created in 70mm traditionally inked cells, but originally it “napped
at the box office,” as one newspaper put
it. This may be one reason it was Disney’s last fairy tale feature for 30
years, until The Little Mermaid made its splash.
Best known of the
fairy tale “animal helpers,” Puss is a bold, swaggering trickster who
masquerades as the servant of a great nobleman; eventually, his clever tactics
bring his young master fame, fortune, and a fancy wife. The story was probably first recorded in
16th-century Italy, but Puss seems to have acquired his swashbuckling boots
about 100 years later in France, in the same book of stories featuring Cinderella, Sleeping
Beauty, and Beauty and the Beast, and he’s been rocking them
ever since.
What’s with the boots?
In an age when the poor mostly went barefoot, shoes were an important status
symbol. Think Nike Airs but even more so. And as Sur La Lune Fairy Tales points
out, “Footwear is important in many popular fairy tales, such as Cinderella’s
slipper… and the red-hot dancing shoes found in Snow White and the
Seven Dwarfs.” Mostly we defy anyone not to find them pretty cute.
Clearly, those boots
were made for walking because Puss has managed to travel astonishingly far
around the world. Scholars say, “The story has been found in all parts of
Europe, across Siberia, onward to India, Indonesia, and the Philippines. It
also traveled with colonists and travelers from Europe to Africa and the
American Indians.”
More recently, of
course, the irrepressible Puss has found new fans and stolen the show in
Dreamworks’ Shrek movies, voiced by a smoldering Antonio
Banderas whose signature introduction is “Puss… in Boots!” When Shrek saves
Puss from a hairball, he earns himself a formidable ally. Could any of us ask
for better? We think not.
If you’ve ever checked
out hairstyles in the doll section of a toy store, you won’t be surprised to
find that Rapunzel is still such a beloved and influential story. More recently
Mattel released a popular 2002 CGI computer-animated film, Barbie As
Rapunzel, and Disney had a hit with the 2010 feature-length
cartoon, Tangled. The girl with the climb-able curls is isolated in
a tower by a wicked witch. Of course this being a fairy tale, it’s only a
matter of time before a handsome prince shouts, “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down
your golden hair,” and before you know it, they’re united in perfect bliss.
Surprise! The Grimm
version of Rapunzel is so very much grimmer. Rapunzel winds up in the witch’s
clutches in the first place because her pregnant mother couldn’t stop stealing
magic herbs from the old crone’s garden. (And you thought cravings for pickles
and ice cream were bad!) The witch finds out about Rapunzel’s secret visitor
when the girl’s unexpected pregnancy bursts the seams of her dresses. Using
Rapunzel’s hair as a lure, the witch catches the prince and throws him to the
ground, where thorns pierce his eyes. She leaves him to wander alone for years
in the wilderness. (Jealous much?) But it is a fairy tale, so
eventually Rapunzel, now the mother of the prince’s toddler twins, runs into
him by chance; her tears fall onto his face, miraculously restoring his vision,
and leading the couple to their belated happily ever after.
01.05.2019 My best friend
Friendship is having a good relationship with
someone, who we call a friend. People in a friendship have respect and affection for each other. A friendship is
different from a romantic relationship;
friends do not necessarily love each other romantically.
A friend is a person that someone likes or knows. People who are friends talk to each other and spend time together. They
also help each other when they are in trouble or are hurt. Friends are people
that can be looked up to and trusted. Sometimes people can't tell their secrets
to their parents so they tell it to their friends. Usually friends have similar
interests. A friend is one who admires a person's skill and helps
or encourages them
to make the right choices.
The strength of the
bond of friendship between two people can vary. If the bond is very strong,
they are called best friends. This can usually be achieved by possessing the
elements of friendship, by being kind, generous, loyal, honest and by having
fun. With these qualities you can truly enjoy the bliss of friendship. There
are expectations, demands and complaints in friendship too. Some people say
these should not be there in friendship. But two people interact in this world
only when there are expectations. Friends can help you materialistically and
morally. But if they don't match with your expectations, it doesn't mean you
will break the friendship. This is what is different in friendship as compared
to love relationship between two couples. Its all about understanding,
realizing and helping whenever possible.
Have you got a best friend? What is she or he like? When and where did you meet? Why do you get on so well? Do you ever have arguments? Tell us about your best friend.
FRIENDSHIP
- FOR KIDS
Contents
Everybody needs friends. You can feel very sad and lonely if you
don't have someone to play with and be with - it
happens to everybody sometimes. Here are some ideas to help you in
making friends and keeping friends. Having friends is
also about how to be a friend and how to be a friend to yourself!
·
Spending time together.
·
Sharing ideas and treats.
·
Having fun.
·
Respecting each other's differences.
·
Loyalty, sticking up for each other.
·
Caring for each other's safety and wellbeing.
·
Both of you working on the skills to keep your
friendship going.
|
Start by asking yourself some questions. If you
like yourself, others will probably like you too.
·
Am I a friendly person?
·
Am I a positive person who looks forward to each day?
·
Am I a good listener?
·
What am I good at?
·
What do I like to do in my spare time?
·
What do I like about my looks?
·
Do I like myself?
You will have times when you mess up or feel ashamed about
things you may have said or done, but you're still OK as a person - believe it
or not that happens to everyone, even parents and teachers!
If you are feeling sad and can't seem to find things that you
like about yourself, here is something you can do.
·
Print out the sheet at the end of this topic and ask people like
mum, dad, grandma, your teacher, family friends or your friends to fill it in
with you.
·
Or talk to a trusted adult about how you feel.
If someone doesn't like you don't worry - you can't expect
everyone to like you. After all, you don't like everyone either, do you?
You can show what a nice person you are by always being pleasant
and good mannered - even to people you don't like.
How to be a friend!
Always
·
Talk -
be interesting, keep up with what's going on around you, eg TV,
sports, music,
shared interests - so that you have something to talk about.
·
Share the conversation, so that you each get a chance to be
listeners and talkers.
·
Listen to what your friends are saying and ask questions about
it.
·
Praise your friends when they do something well.
·
Use your manners - say please and thank you. Friends like
to be pleasant to each other.
·
Think of yourself as being a friendly person, look
friendly and be friendly - and others will find you friendly.
·
Be helpful - do things for your friends without keeping a score on
who's done the most favours.
·
Give back things you have used or borrowed from
each other (this is a good idea for brothers and sisters, too).
·
Be
aware of others' feelings - think before you speak. (Sometimes it is a good idea to
keep your thoughts to yourself rather than upset people's feelings.)
·
Handle conflict - by being clear about what you want and
how you will compromise.
·
Share your time with other friends.
·
Be honest about your feelings, eg. "I don't think this is a
good idea because…" But don't always try to be the leader - try out other
people's ideas.
·
Try to understand people by thinking
about things from their point of view.
·
Don't argue and get upset if your friend doesn't
agree with you about something. That's O.K. She has the right to an opinion
too.
Things you should try not to do:
·
Don't brag about what you've got or done.
·
No put downs - you wouldn't like it if someone did
this to you.
·
No prejudice - don't make comments about country,
colour, religion or physical appearance. "If you can't find anything nice
to say about someone, say nothing," is a good motto for everybody.
·
Don't take over -
let others tell their own jokes and news.
·
Don't fight your friends' battles. You
can support your friends by helping them to deal with their problems:
o Help
them to stay safe.
o Encourage
them to try.
o Be
there when they need you to be.
o Help
them to make good choices.
o Encourage
them to look for help from trusted adults.
·
Don't talk about them without their
permission.
You are a unique (only one like you) person with lots of different sides to your character, so you can have different friends who share your different interests, eg friends at school, in your street, in sport clubs, at church, in your family, etc.
It's good to have a best friend but it's good to have other
friends too.
·
Having equal shares, not one always the leader and the other
following.
·
Having lots of fun together (if not, you'd better look for
another friend!)
·
Both of you working at keeping the friendship.Giving each other
some space.
·
Even best friends need some time to be alone or with other
friends, so don't try to 'own' each other.
·
Respecting each other's differences.
·
Feeling safe talking to each other about your feelings and
problems.
·
Trusting each other and looking out for each other.
·
Not sharing their secrets. (If your friend tells you that he or
she is 'unsafe', encourage them to tell a trusted adult.)
Being 'popular', and having real friends, is not
always the same thing.
Most adults would think themselves really lucky to have one true
friend - someone they can trust and rely on for their help and support when
they need it. Real friendship lasts through good times and bad times.
Remember: Good friends can play
with other people sometimes and still be friends.
Sounds weird?
Think about it.
Who are you with all the time? Yourself.
So, take some time to really get to know yourself.
This is what some children have written about their friends:
Friends are always nice to each other.
Respect your friends and they'll respect you.
I like friends a lot.
Encourage one another to be good.
Nice people are usually good people to be your friends.
Deserting your friends is very unkind.
Sticking up for one another is what good friends do.

01.06.2019 The Children's Day
What is
Children's Day?
It’s
about a fun day, with a serious message, when kids ‘take over’ high-visibility
roles in media, politics, business, sport and entertainment to shine a light on
the most pressing challenges faced by their generation. It’s about lots of
events all over Ireland celebrating this.
One of the main aims of National Children’s Day is
educating people on the importance of a healthy childhood. In addition to
providing the little ones with plenty of fun activities, this is also the time
to help raise awareness for the need to protect the rights of children so that
they can become healthy and happy adults.Of course, it is not only children and
their parents who can join in the fun of National Children’s Day 2018.
Carers of all types such as teachers, babysitters and aunts can also take the
opportunity to show children in their local community how important they are.
This is a good time for business owners to give something back by offering free
treats for children or arranging some form of entertainment that children can
take part in.
Children’s Day was established to honor and promote the welfare
of the world’s children. Universally it is celebrated on November 20th, but
many different countries around the world have their own day set aside for its
observance. For instance, in Haiti it is celebrated on April 12th, while in
Germany it is celebrated on September 20th. In the United States, it is
celebrated on the second Sunday of June.
International
Children’s Day, which is not the same as Universal Children’s Day, is celebrated
annually on June 1. Although widely celebrated, many countries do not recognize
June 1 as Children’s Day.
In the United States,
Children’s Day is typically celebrated on the second Sunday in June. The
tradition dates back to 1856 when the Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard, pastor of
the Universalist Church of the Redeemer in Chelsea, Massachusetts, held a
special service focused on children.
Over
the years, several denominations declared or recommended an annual observance
be held for children, but no government action has been taken. Past presidents
have periodically proclaimed a National Child’s Day or National Children’s Day,
but no official yearly celebration of National Children’s Day has been
established in the United States.
The
International Day for Protection of Children is also observed on June 1 and has
helped elevate June 1 as the internationally recognized day to celebrate
children. The International Day for Protection of Children became universally
established in 1954 to protect children’s rights, end child labor and guarantee
access to education.
Universal
Children’s Day was created to change the way children are viewed and treated by
society and to improve children’s welfare. First established by a United
Nations’ Resolution in 1954, Universal Children’s Day is a day to advocate for
and champion the rights of children. Children’s rights are not special rights
or different rights. They are fundamental human rights. A child is a human
being, entitled to be treated as one and should be celebrated as such.
Happy Children's
Day: Its importance, significance and history
HISTORY
On December 14, 1954 a
universal day dedicated to children was instituted by United Nation’s
Resolution 836 (IX) as an observance of the understanding and brotherhood among
all the children of the world. It was also used to outline a solemn oath to
children that the world would do whatever it took to protect, educate and
secure their overall well-being
CUSTOMS
AND CELEBRATIONS
National Sovereignty
and Children’s Day in Turkey-This celebration takes place on April 23 in Turkey
is one of the biggest celebrations of its kind in the world. Children from
around the world get to take place in the festivities which include parades and
street performances.
CONCLUSION
Children’s day is a
day of the year to commemorate our most valuable resource, our children, and
ensure that they are given the tools they need to not only survive but also to
thrive in our society.
All
the kids, chin up, smile and celebrate the day dedicated specially to you!
November 14 is celebrated as Children’s Day (also called Bal Diwas) in our
country and the occasion also commemorates the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal
Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. As the schools and colleges gear up
to celebrate this day, here is all you need to know about the history,
importance and significance of the occasionNehru was known for his affection and love for kids, whom he regarded as the ‘future of the country’ and was fondly called as Chacha Nehru. “The children of today will make the India of tomorrow. The way we bring them up will determine the future of the country,” he exclaimed once. He always emphasised on the education of children and played a major role in establishment of colleges in the country which are still considered one of the best in the country.
On this day, schools and colleges organise
various programmes like plays, competitions, cultural events etc., and sweets,
books, stationary and other gifts are distributed to children. Also, November
20 is celebrated as the Universal Children’s Day, as declared by the United
Nations.
The day is a reminder that every child deserves education,
nurturing and the best of everything. They are the building blocks of the
nation and hence, the future of the nation depends how well they are brought
up. To those who are now an adult, keep the kid inside you alive!
